usage of gou ji zi (wolfberry or gou ji berry)

the herb “gou ji zi” or called “wolfberry” or “gou ji berry” is a very common and good herb. they look like raisins but in red color, tasted sweet, rich in vitamin A, benefits eyes, the liver and kidneys.

besides being used in Chinese herbal formulas, it can be added to soups, or I have seen it being added to cereal. my dad used to eat a handful a day or put in his tea. there was one time I was making oatmeal raisin cookies and I forgot to buy raisins. I put in this herb instead of raisins. it turned out to be a success. there is a Chinese bakery in Milbrae even carries “Gou Ji bread”.

they can be purchased from major chinese grocery stores, such as 99 ranch market, or the herb shops in china town. but before consuming and if any concerns, please consult with your healthcare physician first.
